Footballers Help To Boost Literacy
(UK) With Phatgnat's rant about footballers being bad for kids and the game as a whole needing a lot more pressure to change from its commercial sponsors, we're happy to read about the following positive scheme:
'Premier League Reading Stars' is a joint initiative with the National Literacy Trust and The Football Foundation. The scheme uses footballers from all the top 20 Premier Leage teams to name their favourite books and each of their clubs will adopt a local library. The chosen titles plus others will then be given free to the library by their 'Reading Champions'.
The scheme hopes to promote literacy and motivate parents and children to read together.
This BBC News link has the list of footballers and the books they have chosen. Professor John Beer, of Cambridge University, said 'the good thing about the list is its diversity and the fact that there's no immediate or obvious agenda: on it the books that I know all have a straightforward attractiveness that's likely to keep the pages being turned while engaging the mind in some way, which must be one of the prime aims.'
*Although, the two partners can't seem to decide what the joint initiative is called—the National Literacy Trust calls it 'Reading the Game' and the Football Foundation, 'Premier League Reading Stars'—come on guys, sort it out!
