Impact Of Healthy School Meals Campaign
(UK) The impact of the 'Feed Me Better' campaign by Jamie Oliver ensured a £280million pledge by the government, however, the campaign is now impacting on those catering firms who currently supply the school meals.
Scholarist is the food service giant Compass Group's education arm, currently supplying school meals to over 2,500 schools, colleges and universities across the UK, which accounts for 9% of its £3.1billion UK business.
It seems that the impact of the original Jamie Oliver's School Dinners programme and the current financial investment from the government has left many regional authorities reconsidering their school catering contracts.
When asked about the possibility of schools terminating contracts, Compass spokeswoman Lesley Potter, said: 'We have had no indication of that at all.'
There seems to be only one option available to Scholarest (and other food service organisations): start offering a much healthier and nutrituionally balanced range of meals at the better prices—although, the Compass seems to be already understanding this.
As Phatgnat has already oulined here, there is now opportunity for the smaller and 'healthier' food suppliers to move into the space that will be left. Local food producers will also be looking to supply produce as well.
As an aside, the third largest catering supplier for schools, Sodexho, will not take contracts for less than 55p per child.
