The Economist Debate on CSR
(UK) The Economist magazine's critical feature on CSR titled, 'The Good Company: A Skeptical Look at Corporate Social Responsibility' (need premium reg. for access), generated one of the biggest postbags on any issue with 95% being against the article. Due to this, an open debate was held at the RSA to disucss the following motion:
'Companies investing time and money in CSR are digging their own graves.'
In the 'for the motion' corner was Clive Crook, deputy editor, The Economist and Stephen Isaacs, Managing Director, George Harrison Ltd. (couldn't find any info. on this company—anyone?)
And in the 'against the motion' corner were John Drummond, CEO, Corporate Culture and Simon Cooper, Group Public Affairs Director, GWR.
The main arguments for the motion were:
CSR is simply good management;
donations and sponsorships are frequently a waste of shareholder money;i>
focusing on CSR could mean taking your eye off the ball;
CSR is a dangerous mindset and undermines and softens capitalism;
social issues are the responsibility of government not business;
much CSR is simply marketing;
many CSR practices are counter-productive;
Apparently, the motion was rejected—80% of the audience were against the motion and 20% for.
Phatgnat has the transcript of the 'against the motion' speakers and will be happy to email them on, although, we have been informed that they will be on the RSA website in about a week.
