We Don't Hate Football…
(UK) Phatgnat has discussed before the negative effects of footballers actions and how the sponsors of the game should be using the leverage they have to effect changes—here and here.
The recent incident between Newcastle United midfielders Kieron Dyer and Lee Bowyer, who ended up brawling on the pitch in the middle of the game, highlights the issues that needs to be addressed urgently.
Across the border into Wales and a crackdown by the Welsh Rugby Union on players and fans who abuse referees appears to be taking effect. Disciplinary action has been taken following four cases of verbal and physical abuse against match officials. One player had a two-year suspension.
The WRU announced its 'zero-tolerance' policy on referee abuse in January and last month, the WRU's regulatory committee heard four cases involving physical and verbal attacks on referees. One player received a two-year suspension from playing for throwing a kicking tee at the match official.
Although some may think this is harse the importance of respecting match officials must be protected.
Now, can football be tough enough to enforce similar sanctions on the clubs and its players?
