Starting Point
(UK/US) A few weeks ago I asked the question about whether malls in the US have policies to ban young patrons such as the latest UK banning of kids wearing hoodies?
Well, (via Ypulse) I get an answer—young people in the US are facing similar bans and curfews such as under 16 year olds not being allowed to cruise the mall without adult supervision in the evenings?
It's a great article, looking at the issues and outlining both sides of the story.
Recently, Phatgnat had an enquiry from a UK shopping centre with serious anti-social issues, asking for any advice and assistance. Instead of legislating and creating restraining policies, they were 'looking for ways to empower teenagers and young adults, to encourage them to see the centre as their own and from that grow respect for the place and the people that work and shop here' -
Phatgnat advised to contact their local youth service, Crime & Disorder Reduction Partnerships, Drugs Action Team, Neighbourhood Watch/Wardens Schemes etc. to explore whether there is any money/initiatives availablewhich tackle the said issues
Fortunately, they were already building relationships with the above and there might be avenues in which Phatgnat will be involved further.
However, the most important thing about this enquiry is the intentions of the shopping centre. They have a problem, they are trying to rectify it—but in stark contrast to 'banning hoodies' or 'setting curfews' they have a totally different 'starting point'. It is positive, participative, engaging and open…
How's your start?
