Perceived Designs
This news story is a little out of Phatgnat's remit (note ages of young people) but still worthy of discussion. Thirty eight-year-olds have spent the past three years working with designers and architects to help create the £13.3m Unicorn Theatre in Southwark.
Fantastic.
The theatre's artistic director, Tony Graham, said 'they kept reminding us in the consultation that they knew what it was like to be a child and to feel like a child a million times more than we did. So we had to take their views very seriously—everything from seating, sight lines, and facilities in the building.'
If your products or services are for young people and they are not involved in in the design and delivery then you run a risk of failure—simple as. It's not about focus groups and tick boxes it's about participation.
The numerous consultations which Phatgnat has developed and delivered in the past always had one reason behind them: from the results you can then design for the actual rather than the perceived.
