Youth Pub Opens—Youth Squad Formed
One door opens, another door closes…
In the town of Shefford, Bedfordshire(UK) a non-alcoholic youth pub has opened it doors to 14-17 year olds. Operated by the local police and community outreach workers, the pub is a direct response to the needs of the local young people, who wanted somewhere to meet and chat other than the streets.
There have been many cases of pubs and clubs holding special 'youth-nights' but this is one of a very few that is open every night.
In direct contrast is the news that the Darlington police has formed a 'youth squad' to specifically tackle young troublemakers in the town. 'One sergeant and four constables will be able to call on additional resources of up to 130 officers if needed' to target binge drinkers in specific areas of the town.
With the UK government focusing heavily on anti-social behaviour, the rise in ASBO's Anti Social Behaviour Orders) and local curfews, surely the option of providing a safe venue with optional structured activities for young people should be the first issue in getting young people off the streets. Targeted approaches can then be taken with the assistance of local youth services and the voluntary sector with the aim to feed into positive and alternative activities.
In my last role as Corporate Youth Officer for a local authority I project managed a youth diversionary scheme similar to this recent initiative. It was funded through the Home Office and its aim was to provide late night activities targeting young people aged 14-18 at risk of offending. The multi-agency approach ensured we could provide an over-arching programme that included transport, facilities, coaching, youth worker support and educational workshops on issues that was applicable to the group (such as smoking cessation, drugs awareness, rights, sexual health etc.).
With initiatives such as this (including schemes like the youth pub) there are obvious opportunities for local and national companies to get involved. Why aren't companies seeing the benefit in providing equipment, services, volunteers, facilities, clothing etc.?
…then again are they being approached?
These type of schemes is what Phatgnat is all about.
In unrelated news I would love to be a fly on the wall at this event.
