Super-School-Grounds
(UK) At the recent conferenceI attended—details in this post—I heard about 'Supergrounds':
'Supergrounds is a new £3 million, three-year community programme funded by NatWest and The Royal Bank of Scotland. Helping 450 primary schools over three years, from around the UK, Supergrounds aims to transform existing school grounds into attractive and stimulating places where children can learn and play in safety.'
The bank and their partners—Learning Through Landscapes and Groundwork—provide this scheme to schools that has been nominated by a local branch, and with RBS the only bank committed to not closing any of its branches, this means that there is geniune contact and existance in the local community.
A similar project was discussed at the same conference. The partnership of Coca-Cola and Youth Sports Trust adopts the same model but focuses on secondary schools. Personal Best Challenge Parks is a scheme that has only developed three schools the partnership is committed to another ten. although they are now looking to the governement to take ownership of the scheme and fund the rest of the schools nationally.
The two schemes are obviously similar and commendable, however, the conference delegates felt there was some conflict of interest in Coca-Cola's partnership. There seemed to be a general feeling of distaste with a company whose products are linked with negative health related issues wanting to back a project that combats these issues.
