School Dinners Suck…It's Official
(UK) Jamie Oliver (TV Chef) focuses on the issue of poor nutritional school meals through his new programme—Jamie's School Dinners—and his campaign, 'Feed Me Better' is now getting the backing of MP's.
They are calling on the government to introduce minimum standards to ensure there is less sugar, fat and salt in school meals, in the light of the celebrity chef calling much of what is offered to children as 'nutritional rubbish'.
It's alarming to think that each school meal costs less than 45p, which is a quarter of a the cost of prison food.
The government obviously needs to re-invest into schools—not just in the cafeteria. Schools are constantly struggling to provide for their educational programmes and equipment let alone provide a balanced and nutritionally-rich meal for their students.
Phatgnat feels there is room for opportunity here with healthy food and drink companies. Maybe they cannot offer the financial incentive for schools to provide their drinks in vending machines like such companies as Nestle or Pepsi, but providing their goods NOW before any leglislation is agreed upon will make you a market leader.
Surely, a healthy food or drink manufacturer or supplier providing their products in schools, at cost, would make much better sense than spend that money on a marketing campaign?
