Why Aren't The Skate/BMX Labels More Involved?
(World) Phatgnat has contributed a post for the psfk.com about skateboarding entitled 'The 35 Year Old Passing Trend'. We have also written an article for a local skateboarding 'zine on how to get support from your local authority based on our experience of working for a council and supporting a youth group in their campaign to get support for a skate/bmx facility.
There is an obvious gap between the need for provision and the facilities available. To the public sector skateboarding (or BMXing) is something that needs to be controlled rather than embraced and supported. Local authorities are investing more and more in anti-skateboarding measures such as these. Police forces are also having to deal with a rising number of reported anti-social behaviour issues relating to young people riding and skating in urban areas.
Skate/BMX clothing and manufacturing companies invest in sponsoring individuals and 'teams' of riders and skaters and also putting on tours to show off their sponsored talents and raise their brand profile.
Phatgnat sees an opportunity for brands to get involved further in the development and sponsoring of specific facilities for skaters/riders. Much like RBS and the 'Supergrounds' initiative it would make more of an impact investing in facilities than people…
