Hoodies Banned
(UK) The largest shopping centre in the UK has banned young people from wearing hoodies as part of its 'zero-tolerance code' towards anti-social behaviour. The code also bans groups of more than five who do not intend to shop and prohibits caps and hooded tops which could prevent identification.
The Bluewater Shopping Centre in Kent has had to call in the Police 23 times in the past eight months to deal with rowdy and nuisance behaviour.
The results of the code will be interesting to see, however, if you check out the 'leisure and activities' section of the Bluewater Shopping Centre you will see that for anyone under 11 there is a host of things to keep you entertained, and if you are over 18 you can certainly enjoy the many bars and restaurants there—but what if you fall between these categories?
It's part of a bigger issue of how little the 11-19s group are catered for in many aspects of society. Maybe the centre has missed the opportunity to develop youth-specific pro-social activities which would ensure the young people's continuing presence and more importantly the money they bring in.
In the US 'hanging out' in the shopping centres/malls is part of every teens life…do they have similar bans?
