The Business Of Business

phatgnatthoughts

Today sees the launch of the Guardians 'The Giving List—their fifth annual review of corporate responsibility cash giving and partnerships reviews.

The report discusses how more and more businesses are creating partnerships with NGO's and other public sector groups and even though monetary donations topped £948m, an increase of £77m from last year, the number of companies giving 1% or more falls. However, the amount of businesses acquiring the PerCent Standard logo has risen to 127.

It is obvious from the report and articles, NGO's are becoming much more savvy in terms of their understanding of the commercial market. Couple with the fact that many new graduates are entering the 'not-for-profit' sector and the level of understanding and intellectual-weight is now building.

As for the customers, well they are also adding their voice with a Mori survey exploring their views:

—94% think that companies should report on their impacts on both society and the environment.
—71% thought working conditions and fair treatment of workers in developing countries should be ensured by those businesses, regardless of whether there are legal minimum standards in place or not.
91% of respondents agreed government should encourage companies to take their responsibilities more seriously.
—71% agreed with the statement that industry and commerce do not pay enough attention to their social responsibilities.

It's hard to draw any solid conclusions from the report and other findings this year. It's positive to see the amount of financial and overall support is up but surprisingly the percentages are down. I still believe we haven't reached a 'tipping point' on this issue yet and I know Phatgnat will be a piece in the puzzle as businesses move towards a more socially aware (and active) mindset.

As for who top's the list of 'givers' it's ITV with 10.8%, the bulk of which is £19.18m in gifts in kind.
