Civic Involvement
(US) Civic participation is becoming more and more of a theme in youth programmes. As half of humanity goes urban, this issue will become more prevalent.
Majesty Realty are real estate developers, their foundation is supporting a youth programme which focuses on 'creating a new generation of active citizens through a series of activities on civic participation. Carol Baker Tharp, deputy director of the University of Southern California's Civic Engagement Initiative, says:
'It gives me hope for the future of our city to see the enthusiasm these students bring to thinking about their communities. I've been really impressed with the amount of knowledge they have about what is going on in their neighborhoods and who-does-what. Now it's our job to listen to what they have to say and help them get things done!'
In the coming months, the youth leaders will work in teams to create and practice interactive presentations addressing their concerns, and hope to present them before local government officials and policy makers.
(Thanks Dave)
