Reaching Out To Disabled Young People (Part 1)
(UK) Public and private sector organisations are waking up to the commercial benefits of engaging with disabled young people in the UK. In this article Whizz Kidz Ambassador Joshua Dennis, talks about an event Goldman Sachs held to encourage disabled young people to think about a career in Investment Banking.
'They were very sure about what they wanted from their applicants, and I was particularly interested to hear about what they offer young people, especially work experience placements as this is my next step after completing my A-levels.'
Goldman Sachs are also among businesses working with Prospects, which helps people with Aspergers Syndrome get work. Prospects have a new scheme to help disabled students make the transition into work—details here.
A look at the Whizz Kidz Kidz Zone discussion board reveals some of the issues which disabled young people care about.
'My local pub in Stroud doesn't have good access or a disabled toilet, but I have told them over and over that they need to sort it out. Also at uni I am on union council and I have tried to make sure they know about the new legislation (The Disability Discrimination Act)' June, aged 18
More companies and brands need to think about how they engage with disabled young people— adverts by Levis broke new ground recently.
