Let's Get Personal
I recently entered into an email dialogue with a fellow blogger (she blogs with a focus on the development issues relating to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)) and found myself having a little rant which I thought would be useful to share here.
Due to the strategic nature of Phatgnat (operating between the commerical and public sector) I follow a huge variety of blogs and news sources, from my 80+ RSS feeds, email newsletters, journals and newspapers etc.
Invariably, when I come across CSR news items, I'm sorry to say but man they are dull, dull, dull. The rhetoric used and general flavour is not one of excitement and progression but more of placation and resignation.
If Phatgnat has a place in the discussion it is firmly at the creative end of the CSR debate, and maybe because of this, the diatribe of 'monitoring and evaulation systems and processes' just doesn't turn me on.
I get frustrated with the language used as it tries too hard to mimic the business rhetoric which it is trying to battle against. I understand that to communicate you must first learn the language of those you are speaking too but hey, why not get the 'suits' to learn your language not the other way round.
Let's get more personal about it all. After all, most brands/companies exist to make millions of sales of one—take that into the 'boredrooms' and shake it up a bit. Speak to me like I'm a human-being not a human-been. Let me hear your passion and your excitement about what you are doing or planning.
You only have to spend a few clicks here to see how many bold and pro-social projects are being developed, supported and sponsored by brands/companies. I'm constantly impressed and surprised by the sheer amount and creativity of some of the youth projects featured—and I know I'm just scratching the surface.
I'm trying to illustrate that there are examples of brands/companies who are 'getting it', I just wonder if my blogs focus was on the negative there would be a lot more posts…
