My Blog Rules
I'm currently putting together a training course about the use of technology for youth professionals. Weblogs and blogging is obviously a topic to talk about. In the past I have read so many 'top 10s' and 'how-tos' on the nature of it all so decided to share my 5 blogging rules for anyone who's interested:
1. Feed those who feed you - when I first started, I got caught out because I sent loads of links of relevant news items to a well known blogger on youth culture/developments etc., believing in the reciprocal nature of bloggers. I never received anything back from her even though there were posts about my specific area on her blog. If people haven't got time to fire out emails to fellow bloggers on topics of their interest you shouldn't be doing the same for them. It's called 'karma' baby;
2. Like company - even though blogging can be a solitary activity, try and reach out and get others involved. This can either be writing specifically or like above, making people aware you are open to receive links to news stories which could be of interest;
3. If you criticise let them know - I've been criticised before. Not an issue but the fact I found out through a third party is. The two people in question didn't bother to approach me direct. When I challenge or am critical about something I make sure the link gets sent to the appropriate agency/body/brand/person, otherwise you're just neing rude;
4. Be yourself and be authentic - there are several people writing under avatars and pseudonyms but hardly any pull it off. Instead it creates an air of mystery and untrust. Plus, don't write anything you don't believe just to get the traffic. Stuff like that will come back to haunt you;
5. Have fun - I post nearly every day, sometimes more. If you don't enjoy doing this then get out and try something less boring instead!
Again, if you want to get involved in writing for the Phatgnat (web)log then please check out this post for more information.
