Crip walk or C-walk?
(US) Those who know what I'm talking about here, will know the difference. However those that don't, will be completely bemused. Both of these are dances…but one of these can risk you getting some undesirable attention and at the extreme end, risk of getting killed.
Forget 'happy slapping', this is the serious stuff.
Remember the good ole days when dancing in the street was something break dancers did and David Bowie sang about? Yeah me too. But everything's got a history hasn't it? And things evolve…very often 'not' the direction we want them to go in.
Crip history tells of 1960s Los Angeles Black Panther connections and its evolution into gang rivalry and inevitably into the hip hop movement. With out dwelling too much on 'then', it's basically still alive and kicking now. It's nothing new to the US, as for years it worried schools when kids took up dancing in the playgrounds not knowing the gang connections, and how a simple dance at a club night could end up offending many people in the room, to the point of you possibly not making it home that night (if you know what I mean).
Well, lets fast forward this now, and the 'Crip Walk' has evolved to the 'C-walk' (or Clown Walk) and is very popular indeed, and promoted very subconsciously on our TV screens by dance moves from the likes of classic Ice Cube to little upstarts like Lil Bow Wow, to MTVs 'Pimp My Ride' host Xzibit. In certain circles its spread to the UK, but mainly through educated break dancers and street crews at the moment.
Personally, I think its still got a little way to go before it explodes here, but it will eventually. The nervous hope is, will it leave the gang culture connections on the other side of the Atlantic? I certainly hope so.
"Gangsters don't dance"… but they do 'Crip'.
