Super Super Bowl

nfl logo

(US) The NFL Super Bowl is arguably the biggest sporting event to take place in the US. This year Super Bowl XL took place 15minutes from my house in Detroit, Michigan and the week leading up to it was filled with a ton of activities. From the Motown Winter Blast, to charity events and a huge number of high profile parties (Playboy, Maxim, Sport Illustrated, etc.).

It is estimated that Super Bowl XL had a $300 million dollar impact on Detroit's local economy (I read another estimate that put it around $50 million), nonetheless, besides all the transportation, hotels, food, parties and alcohol, where did all the money go?

Well I searched around and it looks like two great donations will be making an impact in the city of Detroit for years to come…

While in town AOL (America Online) donated $80,000 in computer equipment which included 30 computers equipped with the latest software, two laser printers, a projector, a plasma television and workstations for each of the computers. AOL also paid a portion of the cost to refurbish the room for use as a lab. Money much better spent as opposed to those annoying discs you get in the mail offering 1,000 free minutes! Does anyone use minutes on-line anymore?

Also another great project is the $6 million dollar NFL Youth Education Town—Boys and Girls Club. The 'town' is a private-public partnership funded by the National Football League and local sponsors. Building the centers near host cities has been part of the Super Bowl experience since 1993 and the mission of the program is to enhance educational and recreational opportunities for disadvantaged youth.

Richard Dauch, chairman and CEO of American Axle & Manufacturing Holdings Inc. who donated $1.5 million to the project said:

You only pass by once, but what you leave behind is what you stood for.

What a great quote for business leaders to reflect upon. Beyond all the profits, the shareholders and quarterly earnings, what will you and your company leave behind? What will you stand for?
