Phatgnat Relationship Guide / Motorola Brush-Off

motorola

On the Motorola website there's a nice online interview with CEO Ed Zander, discussing their 'global corporate citizenship' activities and agenda. They have a Motorola Foundation which does some great work so I contacted them about it.

I asked to hear more about their activities with young people in this area and if they had a UK contact. I also told them about the Phatgnat log and a book I'm researching (more on that in the future). Here's the response:

We update our website pretty frequently with current info on what we do around the world. Please keep an eye on it for things that might be of interest to you and your organization. Good luck.

Huh?

They do some great stuff so why aren't they shouting about it or at least fostering relationships in which to disseimate that information?

(What do you think John?)

Obviously, they may have though I was touting for business (they'd be right) or my email hit the wrong peron, but talk about a crap comeback. Unfortunately, over the past year, this response is not the exception. So, I've put together a quick CSR relationship guide:

1. If someone emails/phones you about your work it's OK to share (there is a huge amount of fantastic stuff going on so give yourself permission to shout about it people);
2. Keep your online reports up to date—(Motorola are doing some great work but their last Global Corporate Citizenship report is for 2002 even though the blurb says it's annual);
3. Create a CSR e-mailing/press release list and put me on it (I'm getting on average 500 unique hits per day so keep us 'bloggers' informed as another avenue in which to feature your work);
4. Stop stalling on the blogging issue and get going yourself (like the Salesforce Foundation);

Motorola: the above is not criticism but observations. Many people would have the same thoughts but never actually told you. Mr Ed Zander… you can contact me here.
