Parkour
Le Parkour has massive potiental. If I was 13 again and looking to get into something, parkour would be it. And if I was 44 and a parent and looking for my child to get into something… parkor would probably be it too. its free, instantly available, athletic, disciplined and creative. Never (since skateboarding) have I seen such a fantastic, creative, demanding sport that requires pure concentration, practice and co-ordination to perform. this is exactly the sort of thing I'd be proud about my son (or daughter) taking up. Sure its dangerous and unregulated, but thats the fun part… its like rock climbing without the rules… and as we all know teenagers and rules go together like goldfish and tumble driers. The danger aspect is great. The younger you can be and free of fear the better. Fear holds us back from so much when we get older that I think its important to get rid of as much of it as possible when we're young.
Anyways… the sport is young, and apart from a little BBC advert and Channel 4 coverage, most people haven't even heard of it. which is great. cause the last thing which many kids want to do is get involved in something that's socially approved of. Last year a DVD was produced called 'Jump London', this sparked a spike of interest, but it fizzled out fairly rapidly. there are a few hardcore groups around the country (so google tells me) that are already hooked, but I think its gunna take another spike of interest before the masses really start considering it again.
Think about Redbull before they got into the whole adventure sports thing. Well I know Nike have started investing in the footwear and they don't do anything without good thought, do they (apart from the sweatshops in China I mean)? But the point is, this is a new thing thats going to grow. As more people grow in this cramped country that is urban england, the restriction of life and increased laws will force people to go in different directions for their fun and recreation… to the point where kids everywhere could be literally climbing the walls.
