Don't Buy Me

phatgnatthoughts

(WORLD) Hand up if you know of any companies doing their bit to encourage and promote less consumption?

I hear the gasps and know you're shaking your heads because the very nature of business is to sell, and when you sell something someone else acquires that sale therefore you propogate growth. Now times that by hundreds, thousands, millions, squillions and you have the capitilist model of the society we live in today.

It's a commodification culture and when you're a young person you are as noticable if you don't have something than those who have. The focus of many products and services are firmly on the youth pound/dollar/yen with sometimes very aggressive and subversive tactics.

If we take a look at the 'ethical marketplace' and its marketing focus it's very much on what they don't have or do to the environment. That's their USP and I'm not knocking that but those who are on top of the commercial tree are brands that 'give'. Not in terms of philanthopic campaigns but give the consumer/customer something whether that be an elevation of social status through attainment or an aligment with that brands values.

I'm just thinking out loud here but maybe 'ethical' brands (or brands generally) should focus on what they give back to the individual or wider community.

Just some thoughts…
