Getting Mashed
I am so loving mash ups!
For those of you who haven't got a clue what I'm on about then don't berate yourself too much because mash ups are still very much 'under the radar' of most people.
Mash ups are when two songs are mixed into one. This is more than just using samples, using a 'vocal hook' or 'beat' in another song—this is about literally 'mashing' two very different songs together to form a totally new offering.
It's always better to show rather than tell:
Mash ups are also being used in totally new and creative ways. In the past couple of months I have seen a dozen or so 'film' mash ups, where people have used the trailer soundtrack of one movie and mashed it together with clips from another. The result is sometimes brilliantly funny:
It doesn't end there as mash ups are springing up in technology, fashion, online games, car designs—pretty much anywhere and everywhere once you get your mash up goggles on.
And then there's the mash up weblogs where you can keep up to date with all things mashed. Here are my favourite two at the moment:
• Mash Up Mansion
• Mash Up Town (podcast)
And just to get you further in the mood, check out the online mixing desk from the Ministry of Sound to promote their new Mash Up alubm.
Come on people—let's get mashed!
[AFTERTHOUGHT:] Just realised the obvious correlation to mash ups and Phatgnat. I put together two/three partners and deliver youth projects for them. I create youth mash up projects :-)
