600 subscribers to the Phatgnat Bulletin!
Yes it was a silly number to celebrate but who cares—any excuse for a cake and to wear a funny hat!
Without further ado may I introduce my new bestest friend (whom I emailed and got to send some more info about himself), winner of the prize (which I have yet to pick out) and the 600th subscriber to the Phatgnat bulletin, Tony Pham:
Early on, Tony realized the importance of young people having their own voice. Growing up in Seattle, he was confirmed as one of youngest board member of the King County Children and Family Commission at the age of 16. In that position, Tony advised the county government on how to allocate the health & human services budget and advocated on behalf of social services such as providing homeless shelters for displaced teens.
His first year at university in Iowa, Tony became a regular columnist for (now defunct) powerstudents.com and later moved on to publishing articles for Teen People magazine as a News Team Journalist. During his junior year, Tony spent a semester abroad studying the liberal arts in Madrid and later worked at 7th on Sixth/IMG (organizer of New York Fashion Week). In May 2003, Tony graduated with a B.A from Grinnell College.
After being awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2004, Tony went abroad to pursue his research on "The Economic and Social Implications of Fashion in Vietnam". Tony chose Vietnam because next to China, Vietnam is one of the hottest developing economies in Asia with brands such as Benetton and Mango starting to enter the market for the first time.
During his Fulbright term, Tony served as Fashion Editor to a Vietnamese men's lifestyle magazine and conducted market research of over 1,000 consumers in Ho Chi Minh City to assess and analyze patterns in retail spending such as preferred brands, desirable shopping locations and appealing price points. Before returning to the United States, Tony served as Product Manager to the start-up team at Levi's in Vietnam where he was responsible for buying merchandise and creating marketing programs to launch the brand.
At the beginning of 2006, after working at Buzz Marketing Group in a variety of roles from consultant to director of entertainment/lifestyles, Tony joined Slide as Manger of Creative Marketing where his focus is on viral/guerilla outreach. Tony has written op-ed articles for the Seattle Times and has been quoted in newspapers such as USA Today.
In response to why I signed up for Phatgnat and my opinions on your work, I find Phatgnat to be a energetic and honest resource that provides well thought-out perspectives on how both public and private organizations can engage with youth in a meaningful way. With analysis such as that provided in the Youth Manifesto, you (DK) go beyond the surface of trends speak about the motivations that are driving today's youth.
