Healthy Shelves
(UK) Retail food giant Asda has announced a significant drop is 'unhealthy snacks and drinks' across their stores. They have even started to take brands off their shelves which for years have been high sellers.
Check out these stats:
• The market for carbonated drinks has declined 7 to 8% in the last year
• biscuit sales slumped by 12%
• pastry sales by 11%
• pizzas and frozen food sales fell by 9.2% last year
• confectionery by 3.1%
• bagged snacks by 1.2%
• carbonated soft drinks by 1.7%…while those seen as healthy boomed…
• drinking yoghurts were up 51%
• juices 15.6%
• water 9.4%
Many are calling it a 'tipping point' in the 'unhealthy' food market supported by media and celebrity campaigns. Many of the brands target young people heavily and I would love to see some research as to where the motivation is coming from in terms of what to buy: is it the parents or the young people?
