MTV Announces Youth Activism Research
(US) Just Cause is MTVs 81 pages of colourful research on youth activism. Their objectives was to find out from young people themselves what they understand as 'being involved', explore the barriers faced and look at how youth participate in order to 'activate' others.
Here's how they did it:
• 98 in-person interviews
• 8 expert interviews
• 1187 online survey
• 15 virtual journals
I'm obviously not going to go through the whole research here but here are some of the points of interest which had me nodding and raising my eyebrows:
• the Internet is the main form of information medium used and is also a portal for expression and community;
• young people are hugely aspiration in terms of actually wanting to change the world in small and big ways with an admiral belief it can be done;
• peers still have power but so does the family through encouragement, however, guidance and information is sometimes lacking and its very much about 'catching them early';
• more than a third 'wear' their causes (bands/tees) and also suppoer causes by purchasing items where proceeds go to a special cause;
