UK Youth Tribes
(UK) Those lovely people at Channel 4 gave me access to the results of their new study on UK youth tribes. After inputting my 'username' and 'password' I entered the online space which gave an overview and explanation to tribes such as 'mic massive', 'trackies', 'street rats', 'new-techies' and many more.
Each of the 'tribes' can be searched further as the study gives each an overview, quotes from young people, photos plus a related media diary. Sections are downloadable via pdf and I love the fact there are hyperlinks to relevant key media sites.
As you explore further there are audio 'vox pox' from young people themselves, and the mix of visuals, video and music gives a great flavour to the report. If anyone is wanting to know anything about the state of youth culture in the UK then this would be an excellent place to start.
The 'Tribal Overview' section at the end was intriguing, outlining new and emerging tribes such as 'activists', blitz chic kids', 'freeganists', 'new rastas', 'sport obsessive' etc.
The research was undertaken by Ramp Industry and was formulated from online forums with 500 14-25 year olds, plus group discussions via email and text and discussions with key media and industry players.
The online report gives a great snapshot of bristish youth culture, although there is a dependancy to pigeon-hole to quickly and I wonder how many young people were given the opportunity to talk about their identities traversing the set 'tribes'.
